Most of this category’s privacy story is prose. Plaud processes in Plaud’s cloud. Bee transcribes in Bee’s cloud and deletes the audio. Limitless lifelogs in Limitless’s cloud. Those can all be true today and false after an acquisition, a region withdrawal or a terms update. Humane already demonstrated the terminal case.
Omi is the exception that makes the rest look like marketing. Based Hardware publishes PCB schematics, Gerbers, STEP files and an 88-component bill of materials under MIT, and documents a parts cost of roughly $30 to $50 (Omi hardware docs). The same company documents on-phone transcription without a plan, a metered cloud if you want one, and the option to point speech at a provider you choose (Omi subscriptions).
That combination — cloneable hardware plus a documented offline path — is the only privacy architecture on the shipping list that does not require trusting a vendor’s current mood. You can run it badly. You cannot be locked out of the schematic.
What open does not buy
Omi is still a 25.5 mm orb on a cord with no water-resistance rating and a specification-sheet battery of 10–14 hours from a 150 mAh cell (Omi product FAQ). Ignore the three-day CES interview figure until it appears on that table. There is no published pickup range. The store has a habit of showing sold out. A $19-a-month cloud plan exists for people who do not take the local path, which is most people.
Open source also does not make a recording light brighter. Always-on capture with a hobbyist silhouette is still always-on capture. The privacy win is where the audio goes, not whether the café consented.
How the others fail the rebuild test
Plaud will give you WAV. That is export, which this site scores, and it is not the same as being able to stand up Plaud’s transcriber on a machine you own. Bee’s “audio is never stored” line is the opposite of export: there is nothing to rebuild. Limitless has a real REST lifelog API and an MCP endpoint, which is the right instinct, still pointed at Limitless’s servers.

The methodology privacy axis asks three checkable questions: on-device processing, a visible indicator, export and delete. Omi is the only shipping device that can answer the first with a file in a git repo rather than a promise. That is why it will keep outscoring quieter, prettier mics on that axis, and why a sold-out open pendant is still more interesting than a closed one you can buy today.
