This category has two numbers on every shop page and only one of them is the argument. Hardware is printed in large type. The plan is a footnote, an annual SKU, a “starter” minute cap, or the word free next to a premium that has no price. Methodology scores value as year-one cost: purchase plus twelve months of the encoded plan. That is arithmetic, not a lecture.

Annual SKUs are not monthly divided by twelve

Plaud lists Pro at $17.99 a month or $99.99 a year (Plaud pricing). Printing $8.33 as “the monthly” because 99.99/12 is close would be a fiction next to the advertised month. The Note, Note Pro and NotePin all encode that annual figure so a year of Pro is $99.99, not $215.88. Starter’s 300 minutes is the decoy. Meeting users hit Pro. Unlimited is a third SKU for people who should not be compared against Starter in a value sentence.

Free hardware plans are not free products

Bee’s Pioneer is $49.99 with no billed subscription (Bee Pioneer). That is the actual lowest year-one cost on the shipping list, and it should win a value comparison until Premium ships with a price. A promised plan with no number is not encoded as $0 forever; it is encoded as $0 until there is a number. Amazon can change that.

Omi’s FAQ still offers on-phone transcription without a plan, and also markets cloud from $19 a month (Omi subscriptions). Typical use for people who came for an assistant is the cloud path. Typical use for people who came for open hardware is not. Value notes have to say which.

Humane remains the cautionary invoice: $499 hardware after the October 2024 cut plus $24 a month that was not optional (The Verge). Year one was about $787 for a device that no longer functions. A value score of zero is not spite. It is the year-one formula applied after the brick.

What not to type into an article

Authoring rules here forbid hard-coding a live price in prose, because Plaud will move a SKU and the paragraph will lie. Device pages and <SpecTable /> resolve at build. When a claim is time-bound — “as of 27 August 2025, Plaud listed the Pro preorder at $179” — the date sits in the sentence. That is how launch coverage and the live table can disagree without either being a smear.

Shoppers who compare $159 to $249 without opening the membership page are doing the manufacturers’ work for them. The ranking will not.
