The order of axes on methodology is not a vibe board. Capture is 23 percent of the total, the largest weight, because a clever summary of silence is still silence. Far-field pickup, microphone count, wind and whether a table of four is actually on the file are the job. Everything else is how you live with the job.
Plaud’s Note Pro is the teaching device. Four MEMS microphones, a voice-pickup unit, beamforming, 5 m claimed pickup (Plaud EU). No other shipping object here is built like a recorder first. The Note is two mics and 3 m. Wearables are one or two mics and, too often, no published range at all.
A ring can be honest about failing this axis
Pebble’s Index 01 states a 5–20 cm microphone and says it is not for meetings (Pebble). That is a high-integrity capture score of something low. Sandbar’s Stream Ring is whisper dictation at the hand, not a boardroom array (The Verge, 5 November 2025). Vocci’s ring was already claiming 5 m from one MEMS mic on a moving hand at CES (Engadget, 5 January 2026). The number matches Plaud’s far-field headline with a quarter of the capsules and none of the table. Capture notes have to say the hand moves.
Bee publishes two microphones and no range. Always-on logging can still miss a room if the clip is under a coat. Intelligence that summarises a day is downstream of whatever those capsules heard.
Ties break toward capture on purpose
When totals match, the published chain is capture, then privacy, then lower year-one cost, then slug. That is not because privacy is unimportant. It is because two devices that heard the room equally badly should not be separated by a prettier band. Shoppers who want jewellery first still get a Look axis. They do not get to hide a 20 cm microphone in the average.

Weights are editorial policy about the category, and they live in one module so they cannot drift per page. Changing them re-scores every device, which is the point, and requires a human to re-read every file, which is the brake. What readers see is the table of axes and the blurbs. What they should take away is simpler: if it cannot hear, it cannot be first.
